Me and the Blondes by Teresa Toten

Sophie Kandinsky has big secret. Her alcoholic father is in jail for murder (though Sophie thinks he has been unjustly convicted). For a girl who just wants to be adored, it gets rather difficult when people catch wind of her family secret. This time she has moved and is going to a new school and is determined to create a new identity. She attaches herself to a clique of popular girls called, the Blondes. This book is hilarious and has a great way of looking at life when you are a teenager growing up. Even thought the book takes place in the mid’70s, a lot of the stuff Sophie has to deal with in high school is the same as today. It had me laughing out loud!

I just finished Me and the Blondes and really liked it. I really felt for Sophie as all she wants is to 'fit in'. We have all felt this way at one time or another. Unfortunately, as soon as people find out about her dad, life become difficult for her at school. High school is hard enough without having to deal with that! She has a fresh chance at this new school (6th in 5 years) and is determined to fit in by becoming friends with the popular 'blondes'. Lots about this book is sad, especially the unresolved feelings she has about her dad and how much her mother is affected by her dad's absence. Her new blonde friends also have problems of their own, but Sophie is a good friend to them. However, instead of getting depressing and 'problem novel-like'... this book has some hilarious parts especially with any scenes with her mother or 'aunties'. Their broken English and funny expressions really lighten the mood. Sophie is a really likeable character as she is smart, sensitive and also very funny. I really do recommend that you read this book... you are sure to like it too!

I really liked this book! It had sad moments and really funny moments. Even though the aunties would be soooo embarassing, I thought they were still funny. This book was also realistic - there were some personal moments that have happened in my life too!
